The vortex grit removal unit is installed in a circular concrete tank. The tank contains an inlet where pre-screened effluent enters the system. A rotary paddle in the center creates a vortex effect. The grit particles settle to the bottom and air is blown through a pipe into the base of the airlift system. The saturated grit is then carried to a grit classifier as this air rises through the central discharge pipe. The effluent without grit particles exits the system at the outlet in the upper chamber.
